With spring right around the corner and the promise of warm weather, many of us are starting to think about being outside again. The triangle area is full of lush green spaces for you and your friends to enjoy the great outdoors. But that appreciation of nature does not have to stop when you arrive back home. We have put together a few tips for putting together a wonderful garden to decorate your home.

1. Start Somewhere

The hardest part about restarting your garden is actually doing it. Maybe your home has a neglected patch of soil that could use freshening up. Perhaps you might want to build wooden containers and start with bought soil. Or you have an old flower pot that is just holding dirt. Whatever your approach, just get out there and make it happen!

2. Know the Areas Plant Life

If you are new to the triangle area, you might not know what plants with thrive in your garden. North Carolina can get incredibly cold winters and fairly hot summer days. For this reason, we suggest you plant tough perennials, goldenrods, and coneflowers. Another route you can take is to plant species native to the Carolinas because they generally use less water and are more drought resistant. A few notable plants that are natives are the flowering dogwood, tiarella, trumpet honeysuckle, and both species of blueberry bush.

3. Plotting your Plots

Having a plan is always a good idea. Test your soil to make sure that is crumbles easily in your hands. Plant your seeds far enough apart so that they will not be competing for sunlight or nutrients. Start with easier to grow hardy plants that grow quicker (do not start with an avocado tree). Keep a calendar and plot out your plants to achieve dazzling color effects in your garden. Planting high growers towards the back and lower growing plants towards the front will help everything grow.

4. Provide Water

This tip is short and sweet but easy to get wrong. Because of the summer heat, there might be times that your plants need water. The best way to water your garden is to water consistently and give your plants enough water. Rain might help supplement your watering schedule but be careful not to overwater your plants!

5. Be Patient and Maintain Your Garden

Rome was not built in a day and it is important to remember that your garden will take time. With the initial work out of the way, you must ensure that your work does go to waste. Pull weeds and prune your plants as needed. Give them water as needed. And most importantly, enjoy your garden when it starts to bloom. Remember these tips and your garden is sure to be a success.
